Primarily made of clay and water, bricks are a natural construction material. There are little or no complex chemicals, no exotic compounds and no imported components. So at the end of its lifespan, it could effectively be broken down and returned to the earth where it originally came from. Brick is also recyclable, and old brick walls can be carefully demolished to salvage and re-use a high percentage of the bricks. Like brick, tile is a very green material, made primarily from natural clay. Tile also has an extremely long lifespan, and thus needs to be replaced infrequently which reduces landfill concerns. Many tile manufactures are refining their manufacturing process to be more green-friendly, conserving their use of energy, water and raw materials while reducing waste product.
